This paper looks into the “democratization process” in Turkey and its ramifications on the Turkish education system. Using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this study evaluates the Turkish formal education system in the wider context of democratization and state transformation within the Gramscian concept of hegemony. The study is based on thematic documentary research and semi-structured interviews conducted with newspapers and teacher unions in Turkey. The findings focus on three main themes extracted from the data analysis: homogeneity, civil society and ideology, in the context of democracy.
