In this paper we explore bell hooks’ challenge to confront our narratives. As nontraditional postgraduate scholars and those who work with us, it is important to engage in the process of “re-vision[ing]” by identifying these spaces within academia along with critiquing the counter-hegemonic cultural practices. Reflecting on hooks’s call for resistance, questions emerged such as: how accessible is it to find these spaces, and furthermore, navigate them successfully? Moreover, how might a woman of color from outside of the United States go about identifying these spaces in the “politics of location:” in a large, research one, public, predominantly white institution in the south.
