Coding Comments for Productive Disciplinary Engagement: An Iterative Approach

Abstract

In this paper, the authors develop a coding scheme for “Productive Disciplinary Engagement” in a discussion-based online course. The course and coding scheme take a situative approach to learning. Thus, the coding scheme is not just for the purposes of quantitative analysis; rather, it acts as a summative assessment of student engagement and thus of learning. The authors present three different iterations of the scheme, refining each time through analysis of specific comments. This research has implications for all researchers who seek to code engagement in online learning environments.
