This study uses the National Center for Educational Statistics’ (NCES) School and Staffing Survey (SASS) data from 2011-2012 to investigate the link between leadership qualities and roles in recently certified teachers and their respective certification program. This study is part of a series of studies investigating high quality indicators in support of improving the evaluation of educator preparation programs. Traditionally certified teachers reported significantly higher scores over alternative certification programs in the areas related to confidence to lead in classroom practices whereas alternatively certified teachers reported significantly higher rates of several leadership roles within their respective schools. Recommendations are made for future research in teacher education and teacher certification program evaluation.
