Classrooms for Peace: The Role of the Critical

Sat, April 9, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section C

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate several examples of peace education practice. Towards this goal, a qualitative multiple-case study design was employed to collect, analyze and interpret data as this approach enables us to scrutinize in-depth the possible complexities, challenges, and promises of peace education in each case. The results of the initial analysis demonstrated that the meaning of peace and the activities around this concept were setting-dependent. The way peace and peace education were conceptualized by the teachers in a particular educational setting preeminently influenced all aspects of peace education practice that students experienced. Another critical result that each of these sites suggested was that peace education practice was subject to particular challenges in each setting.
