Skills Needed for Reform-Oriented Student Teaching in Middle Schools

Mon, April 11, 7:45 to 9:15am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section D

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to better understand the skills that student teachers need in order to participate in middle level education reform. This research thus informs the literature on middle level teacher education, particularly regarding the preparation of teacher candidates to engage in reform-oriented student teaching. Using qualitative inquiry, this paper shares the perspectives of four reform-minded student teachers who experimented with reform-oriented teaching practices in their field placement school. Findings indicate that to participate in middle level education reform, student teachers must know how to 1) facilitate a student-centered learning environment, 2) collaborate and navigate school politics, and 3) maintain flexibility and patience despite frustrating circumstances. Implications for middle level teacher education program design are discussed throughout.
