Leadership of Urban Student-Athletes: Who Is Doing It and What Are They Doing?

Abstract

This study seeks to investigate the leadership behaviors of teachers and coaches in urban high schools using Eccles et al.s’ (1998) expectancy-value model as a guide for understanding the context and learning environment surrounding urban student-athletes. Learning how teachers and coaches interact with each other provides much needed insight into the educational environment they are creating for their student-athletes. Specifically, the inquiry aims to understand the relational interactions between high school leaders—teachers and sport coaches-- in the context of student-athlete outcomes.
