Writing About Research in Everyday Language

Sun, April 10, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Marriott Marquis, Floor: Level Four, Independence Salon F

Abstract

Over the past few years, the Institute of Education Sciences has encouraged education researchers to disseminate the findings of their research to practitioners and policymakers. However, it is often challenging for researchers to convey complex educational concepts and research study designs in everyday language. In this presentation, a NCER program officer will present plain language techniques for disseminating research findings to lay audiences. These techniques include identifying your audience and what they need to know, eliminating unnecessary jargon, and reducing possible misinterpretations. She will also discuss how NCER & NCSER are using plain language techniques to make their research publications and web content more accessible to policy-makers and practitioners.
