Innovative approaches to the study of Anne Frank remain infrequently realized in middle grades classrooms. In this paper, we explore movement within an arts-based framework as it engaged students in four middle schools. We frame this study using Deleuze’s (1990) concept of lines of flight to search for moments of “haecceity, an immersion in the present moment that moves the soul” (p. 140) to address our research question, What does movement do in these settings? We employed visual analysis techniques to describe non-linguistic indicators of learning. Findings point to the power of movement to increase engagement in enduring learning opportunities with Anne Frank and substantiate arts-based methodologies to reveal lines of flight in embodied literacy practices.
