Beyond Discipline: Redefining Classroom Management

Sat, April 9, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 158 A

Abstract

Founded in person-centered theory, the Consistency Management & Cooperative Discipline (CMCD) program moves beyond the traditionally behavioristic discipline programs to include preventative and pro-social strategies. Three key management components (BIO management) have evolved to form the core of the program: (1) behavior management, where teachers focus on problem prevention/intervention; (2) instructional management, enabling teachers to use more active models of instruction; and, (3) organizational management, maximizing the classroom’s physical and temporal environment. Over the last three decades, schools that have implemented the CMCD program have experienced significant outcomes in student behavior and achievement (Opuni, 2006; Slavin & Lake, 2008). This paper builds on earlier work (Author, 1996) to its current BIO management development and framework.
