There has been an increased focus on museum-based history teaching and learning over the past decade, including studies focused on historical inquiry and teacher development programs. Little has been done to look at the effect of these programs, however, in terms of how the teachers are able to utilize their new skills and knowledge when they return to their schools. This study of teacher participants from two countries examines the factors for, and barriers to, successful implementation of field based history teaching. Participants received training as part of teacher institutes, but faced numerous contextual barriers to implementing these activities (e.g., cost, curriculum, location). Implications include strategies for reducing barriers to quality field based history learning in school contexts.
