This paper will examine the engagement of a group of Doctoral Candidates from Washington State, who are enrolled into an indigenous institution - Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi )based in New Zealand. The paper will outline the philosophy and practices that have developed through the groups engagement, which involves building tribal and community relationships with Awanuiarangi and support and endorsement for students research. Students will speak to their research and how it is shaped by, and contributes to, tribal/or community agenda's.
