This paper focuses partially on scientist development processes and specifically analyses changes in postgraduate studies and individual circumstances for undertaking post-doctoral studies among young Mexican scientists in three different fields of knowledge. Statistical data and semi-structured interviews with young researchers at the initial stages of their professions (Early Career Research) were used as information sources for this quantitative and qualitative study. Results showed exponential increment in doctorate studies whose priorities have focused primarily on encouraging training and development in national institutions. At the same time, the relevance of individual conditions and factors when deciding whether to move forward or not with a post-doctorate degree is manifest.
