Improving Written Argumentation Through Web-Based, Interdisciplinary Simulations: The GlobalEd 2 Project

Abstract

GlobalEd 2 (GE2) is an interdisciplinary approach to learning written argumentation within social studies classrooms. Leveraging technologies commonly available in most middle grade classrooms, GE2 engages classrooms in simulated negotiations of international agreements on global issues (e.g., water scarcity, climate change). This presentation details results of a randomized treatment/control efficacy study examining the impact of the intervention on writing self-efficacy and ability to author evidenced based arguments in science of 918, 7th and 8th grade students. Results indicate that students participating in a GE2 simulation, not only increased their writing self-efficacy, but also significantly increased the quality of their written scientific arguments and these results indicate significantly higher outcomes than those identified for students in the control classrooms.
