Cognitive Language and Content Standards: Language Inventory of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and Next Generation Science Standards

Sat, April 9, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section A

Abstract

The goal of this research is to begin to understand the interconnectedness of the vocabulary in the Common Core State Standards in mathematics (CCSSM) with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Extant research reveals that teachers are strongly dependent on curricular and instructional materials. Presently, no study has examined the terminology used within and across the CCSSM and NGSS, which are often used for curricular and instructional guidance. This study examines the terminology frequency and alignment within the Standards to uncover emergent patterns stemming from word use. The inventory reveals that there are places of consistent terminology use and alignment across Standards but also places of notable differences. Each scenario holds different yet important implications for practice.
