Broadening the Conversation and Bringing the Conversation Home

Fri, April 8, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Marriott Marquis, Floor: Level Four, Liberty Salon P

Abstract

In this final portion of the session, the audience will be invited to participate in the discussion. Relying on Critical Narrative Inquiry (Clandinin & Connelly, 2000) and Projects in Humanization (Kinloch & San Pedro, 2014), the presenters will highlight the processes involved with storying and re-storying. We will engage the audience in a discussion of how our stories intersect and diverge, focusing on the locations of our stories within and across contexts of power. By providing contemporary and popular media images of Black women as an entry point, the panelists and audience will critically examine the multifaceted implications of taking a closer look at the lived experiences of Black women. The audience will be invited to reflect on connections among literacy, equity, and imagination illuminated by the media images and our discussion. In closing, audience members will be asked to share ideas on how to continue the conversation beyond the annual meeting.
