Understanding Asian Doctoral Students' Experiences in Job-Related Activities

Sat, April 9, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section D

Abstract

The increasing population of international doctorate recipients and their occupational achievement in the U.S. has significantly transformed U.S. graduate education and the U.S. labor market for highly education and skilled workers. This study attempted to understand the experiences of Asian doctoral students in the job search processes and career development decision-making by focusing on the role of parents’ socioeconomic status and social capital. Results showed that they have worked the processes with their significant others or parents who have already earned advanced degrees from U.S. universities. Those who have parents holding professional status were often able to obtain very clear and detailed information about available positions in their home country through their parents’ intervention. The implications for advising are discussed.
