Contributions to a Marxist Historiography for the History of Education

Sun, April 10, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 159 B

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to employ the theory of history Marx and Engels’ (1846/1996) outline in The German Ideology to build a theoretical approach to the history of education. Since the Marxist educational historical work of Bowles and Gintis (1976) and Michael Katz (1975; 1987) scholarship in Marxist approaches to the history of education has advanced little as Marxism has gone out of fashion, and educational foundations has been cut from many teacher education programs across the U.S. What makes the method employed in this paper unique is that it is systematic in that it does not just pick and choose ideas from Marx and Engels, but rather, offers an analysis of the complete system of thought.
