A Critical Case Study of the Cost-Benefits of a One-to-One Learning Initiative

Tue, April 12, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Three, Ballroom B

Abstract

A critical case study investigated faculty and student perceptions of a district-wide one-to-one initiative at one middle school. Purposeful sampling identified teachers from four core subject areas with varying years of teaching experience while the focus group discussion contained students from an existing principal advisory committee. Semi-structured interviews and focus group discussion protocols assisted in obtaining participant perceptions on the uses, benefits, and limitations of integrating technology into instruction. Through open coding, five main themes emerged; shift in pedagogy, students honing 21st century skills, online assessment and feedback, classroom management, and digital literacy. Findings from this study are consistent with previous literature on the benefits and challenges of a one-to-one initiative.
