As science and mathematics teacher educators, we are interested in the possibilities of a teacher education program based on the principles of “place-based education” that assists teacher candidates to become better able to learn from a science/mathematics curriculum of place. In response to research confirming that teacher education programs have been relatively ineffective in helping students connect their field experiences with guidelines for teaching offered to them through their university course work, this research focuses on the application of place-based learning through field experiences, inquiry projects and integrated in-school seminars. Drawing on data from teacher candidates, mentor teachers, school administrators and our own conversations and notes, we identify themes that supported and challenged our pedagogical understandings of science/mathematics theory-and-practice integration.
