Experimentation is a valuable way to build understanding in science. This paper reports on EcoXPT, a new research project to infuses epistemologically authentic experiment-based inquiry within a virtual ecosystem. EcoXPT is an extension of EcoMUVE, a middle school science curriculum that uses immersive virtual worlds to support learning about the causal dynamics of ecosystem. Early pilot data with a new simulated experimentation tool demonstrates students’ ability to test causal relationships, address misconceptions, and draw new conclusions through direct experimentation.
