Collaborative Teaching Across Disciplines: Stories of an English and Social Studies Teacher

Sat, April 9, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

This narrative inquiry shares the stories of two teachers,’ one English and one social studies, collaborative efforts with a colleague from the opposite discipline, social studies and English, respectively. The primary objective was to learn about how these teachers, within their separate teaching teams, understand and attempt to accomplish the goals of both team members’ disciplines while planning instruction. Field texts were collected over two years and consist of stories derived from five recorded conversations, observations, e-mail exchanges, student work samples, teaching materials, PowerPoint slides, and reflective notes. The teachers’ stories suggest that despite challenges, the teachers used their disciplinary angles to recognize the value of the content and texts that are taught and used by their counterparts.
