This design research investigated the feasibility and participant perception of a custom-designed Internet of Things (IoT) system to promote situation awareness in a scenario-based interprofessional medical team simulation. IoT has been defined as a system whereby objects (e.g. RFID tracking and sensor devices) are interconnected over the Internet and can collect, transmit and display data for information and behavioral change. However, examples of IoT applications and systems related to learning and training contexts are limited in number. The focus of this research effort was to begin to elucidate the emerging use of IoT technologies for learning and training for the particular purpose of enhancing medical team training and situation awareness in a medical education context of live-action simulation.
