A Meta-Analysis of Reading Recovery in International Settings

Mon, April 11, 4:30 to 6:30pm, Marriott Marquis, Floor: Level Four, Independence Salon G

Abstract

Reading Recovery is an early literacy intervention implemented across the world. Many reviews have been conducted about Reading Recovery. Few prior reviews have included studies from across multiple nations based on group comparison designs. Several large-scale studies have not been included in prior meta-analyses. We conducted a meta-analysis of Reading Recovery across different countries applying stringent inclusion criteria. The overall effect size was .58, with largest effects in encoding and concepts about print. There was no significant difference between countries and effects varied by literacy outcome type. Contrary to popular belief, the effect for phonological awareness measures was large and there were no significant differences between estimates obtained with internal and external measures.
