The increasing presence of technology in education offers new learning opportunities for mathematics teachers and professional educators. Using a qualitative approach based in teacher knowledge and teacher uncertainty, we describe one instructor’s experiences in a synchronous online setting. We use an interpretive team methodology to analyze naturalistic data. This research gives teachers a first-hand look at how the constraints and affordances of online teaching are negotiated. Our descriptions (1) provide an in-depth perspective into the thinking and actions of a teacher in an online setting, (2) suggest new roles for online technologies in supporting teacher education and professional development, and (3) suggest new perspectives on teacher knowledge in teacher education.
