Teacher retention for beginning teachers remains high, particularly in high needs areas like STEM and special education. Most studies of teacher retention focus on all teachers, examine school characteristics and other proxies for working conditions that are not easily changed, and only look at year-to-year attrition. This 5-year longitudinal study improves on prior research by focusing on how working conditions related to school climate contribute to retention for teachers in their first five years of teaching.
