Countering Misrecognition in the Learning-to-Teach Experience: Factors That Influence Teacher Identity in the Urban School

Abstract

This study reports analyzed factors influencing the formation of teacher identity, and illuminated the importance of understanding those factors that contribute to recognition and misrecognition as teacher. The meaning of teacher identity was deconstructed using the metaphor of palimpsest to frame how identity is written and rewritten over time and in different contexts—social, cultural, political. Three questions guided the study: What constitutes a teacher’s identity? What is the role and responsibility of teacher educators in developing teacher identity? What are the factors that influence the learning-to-teach experience that work in favor of and / or against teacher identity formation?
