Summer 2013 was a turning point in the lives of youth in Turkey due to the Gezi Resistance; wherein a so-called apathetic and apolitical “Generation Y,” took to the streets in order to write their own history. Putting concepts reflecting Freire’s solidarity and unity within diversity into practice, these young adults reported the re-emergence of hope as they participated in wide-scale resistance. This narrative inquiry features the voices, stories and insights of eight young resisters, for the purpose of better understanding both their educational / life needs and the learning potential of hope through critical resistance. It is a site for examining what happened when young people reinvented Freire—and their own lives—in Turkey.
