The Impact of Self-Assessment and Classroom Management

Fri, April 8, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 149 B

Abstract

Question: Will our future teachers be prepared (DeMonte, 2015)? The response necessitates innovative approaches for pre-service teacher development starting with the way they receive pedagogical feedback. Current pre-service teacher evaluations consist of external assessments and do not encourage learner introspection (Arends, 2006). Self-assessments have the potential in guiding educators in self-reflection and self-direction; a key factor in teacher development. The Person-Centered Learning Assessment (PCLA) is used with 10 student teachers during their final semester. Throughout the findings, classroom management is a common student teacher concern. This paper describes how the students use the PCLA to address their classroom management concerns and the foundational role it plays in developing other areas of instruction (Emmer & Stough, 2001).
