The purpose of this exploratory case study was to understand how college-bound seniors from rural communities form their personal values system. Using critical theory as a lens, the researcher examines the process students use to create their values system and identify potential common values they hold. Findings revealed the values of family, education, and financial stability motivated students to attend college but also caused internal conflict as they pursued these new goals. Other emerging themes revealed family and religion as primary sources of influence on the participants’ values; however, that influence manifested itself in different ways for each student. These complex relationships are further explored within the study.
