Abstract

This paper discusses the promotion of critical thinking through Common Core State Standards. The focus is on the problematization of standardized testing in relation to critical thinking skills. A critical analysis from the tradition of Freirean critical pedagogy will be utilized in order to discuss shortcomings with Common Core and alternative epistemologies and methods that may better prepare students for the engagement in critical thinking skills. The Freirean approach emphasizes recognition of political and social context, which broadens the scope of critical thinking and encourages social change. The approach may suggest that Common Core is limited in its ability to promote critical thinking as it relies on standardized testing, and alternatively pedagogical focus on dialogue may better promote these skills.
