Incorporating Culturally Relevant Curriculum Into Developmental Courses for Hispanic College Students

Sun, April 10, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 160

Abstract

This paper presents findings from a study at Adelante College, a Hispanic-majority community college in South Texas, implementing state reform to developmental reading and writing courses. The data uncovered some tensions where faculty struggled to incorporate a culturally relevant curriculum despite their awareness of their location and the community the college serves. Recommendations are made for improving the teaching of Hispanic students in developmental courses.
