Massive Open Online Courses are still steadily growing. MOOC platforms and courses in Japan are made by Japanese specifications, and such regional MOOCs also have an important role in open education for those who are not fluent in second language. However, there is significant criticism on MOOCs by the skeptic, and one major critique directs to its lack of scaffolding to promote learner interactions. One possible approach is blended design by combining face-to-face instruction with online learning. In this goal, we developed a MOOC course on the history of Medieval Japan with such blended option. The present study examined whether and how well learners developed their historical reasoning skills through the coursework by comparative analysis between online and blended groups.
