The Moderating Effects of Computerized Note-Taking on Seductive Details: A Multimedia Learning Study

Sat, April 9, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

Although numerous studies have investigated the seductive details effect in multimedia learning and showed that seductive details have a detrimental effect on learning, little is known about effective strategies to minimize the deleterious effect. The present study examines the impact of computerized note-taking on the seductive details effect. Participants (N = 91) in this study were randomly-assigned to three groups (no-seductive-details-no-note-taking; seductive-details-no-note-taking; and seductive-details-note-taking). Results showed that seductive details hurt learning via extraneous cognitive load and that, in the seductive-details condition, participants who took notes on computers outperformed those who did not take notes. Overall, findings suggest that note-taking is an effective cognitive strategy that can help learners overcome the seductive details
