Teaching Reading Comprehension Strategies to Deaf Students: Evidence From a Game-Based Intervention Study

Mon, April 11, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 142

Abstract

The aim of this study is to develop, implement, and evaluate a 7-months intervention based on games, to teach reading comprehension strategies. 50 deaf students (7th-12th grade) participate in weekly workshops in which their teachers implement the intervention. Six teachers work alongside researchers, meeting weekly to plan and review the workshop sessions. These meetings and work sessions with students are recorded in audio and video respectively. A sample of 24 students are tested three times during the intervention for strategy use and reading comprehension. A control group of 25 students is included. Preliminary results indicate that the intervention allows teachers to review beliefs about learning and reading, and develop new ways of working with students, promoting engagement and learning opportunities.
