Factors Associated With Student Academic Dishonesty: An Empirical Investigation

Abstract

In this proposed study, we constructed a framework based on prior theoretical frameworks to understand how variables work together to predict cheating and utilized structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze data from a large sample of 2,503 college students. Results indicate academic preparation and involvement in extracurricular activities are closely associated with self-reported cheating. Secondly, students who held a more favorable attitude toward cheating are more likely to be engaged in self-reported cheating. While there is no significant direct association between lack of self-control and academic dishonesty, the association between lack of self-control and academic dishonesty is mediated through academic preparation, extracurricular activities, and attitude toward cheating.
