This paper presents the arguments for the design of an embedded reflexive engagement in an arts-integrated constructivist grounded theory study to answer the question: How do young artists learn to engage in critical social and political dialogue through participation in art collectives?
From the collection of data through to coding and analysis, methods have been chosen to purposefully engage artists, works of art, and myself as artist/researcher/citizen to develop theory on how youth learn critical civic praxis through participating in community based collective art. This research methodology pushes disciplinary, and institutional boundaries, engaging in politics, arts, and education in order to build a substantive theory on the conditions where learning critical civic praxis organically arises in collective community spaces.
