This mixed-methods study explores the attitudes of predominately white students and their understanding of contemporary and historical Native American experiences while engaged in Native Studies courses. The analysis describes student attitudes as generally positive, then focuses particularly on students’ perceptions of “unearned advantage” presumed of Native American communities that held fast even to the end of the course. This study suggests that multicultural courses may not be enough and to fully examine the unique ways that racism toward Native American people manifests itself; focused Native studies courses are required, and such courses must intentionally address deeply engrained attitudes held toward Native Americans, such as “unearned advantage”.
