Abstract
This study examined the impact of the Jaime Escalante Math Program’s (JEMP’s) Pre-Algebra and Algebra summer intervention courses on middle school students’ math achievement in a Southern California urban school district. Archived math scores for 2010-2013 were analyzed using a quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group design with two ANCOVAs and a single ANOVA. The dependent variable was the post-California Standards Test (CST) scores and the independent variable was the treatment, with the covariate being the previous CST scores. Results show that students who participated in JEMP had significantly greater gains in math than their counterparts who did not participate in JEMP.
