This paper presents findings from a place-based mathematics curriculum focused on the distribution of financial services across a city. The authors integrate Gruenewald’s (2003a) “critical pedagogy of place” with critical geography to arrive at theoretical underpinnings for integrating place, mathematics, and mapping technologies in a classroom context. The activity under study in this paper involves a walkable 140 square foot floor-map on which students stand in as representations of different parts of the city. The map gets layered with quantitative data about financial services in an embodied activity and students respond using sense of place.
