This study explored Chinese and Japanese adolescents’ motivation for reading from the Self-Determination perspective in the context of collectivistic Eastern Culture. Measures include scales that measure autonomous reading for academic and recreational purposes; controlled reading for academic and recreational purposes; reading self-efficacy, self-regulation, Grit, and reading perseverance. Similar to their western counterpart, it is found that autonomous reading in and out school of Japanese and Chinese adolescents significantly correlate with higher reading self-efficacy, more time spent in reading, stronger perseverance in reading, and higher reading achievement.
