Tue, April 12, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Three, Ballroom B

Abstract

This paper examines strategies for creating critical and sociopolitical consciousness though the deployment of hip-hop cultural forms as the course’s central curricular component.
Rather than position hip-hop culture as a curricular intervention solely to foster acquisition of academic content, this project examines the strategies a course can implement to foster affective, democratic, and political engagement in addition to rigorous academic standards.
Furthermore, this project explores the ways in which these strategies lead to student interest both in academic success and civic engagement.
This project works toward demonstrating that not only is “hip-hop based education” a viable pedagogic strategy, but additionally is a crucial component to developing the next generation of public intellectuals and activists.
