A key aspect to facilitating problem-centered whole class discussions is the use of student work to create productive norms of interaction and help students gain access to deeper and more meaningful mathematics. Yet, teachers face a dilemma when student-generated strategies fail to appear during the course of a lesson that are essential to advancing the mathematical and sociomathematical goals of the lesson. In this proposal we investigate curriculum-generated student work, work that is attributed to students but appears in written curriculum materials. In particular, we discuss an analytic framework that serves as a first step in better understanding the potential opportunities to learn mathematics within these materials.
