This paper examines and bridges theories of affect and multimodality, seeking to extend literacy scholarship through the connection of cultural studies, trauma studies and critical literacy. We seek to understand how multimodal 'assemblages' (Deleuze & Guattari, 1988; Puar, 2007) such as visual, auditory, digital, media and the corporeal take shape through affective dimensions that build, (de)intensify, and re-work representations of class, gender and sexuality into productive and intersectional possibilities. Through post-structural and queer, feminist approaches we (dis)entangle the affective within multimodality and seek to describe and explore subjectivities always in process, yet relationally felt, seen and heard.
