This design-based research study investigated how a mobile learning environment using “gamification” strategies supported young children’s science learning during an informal, summer camp experience. Specifically, we investigated how our mobile app and pedagogy supported young children (ages 5-9) to: (a) engage in science talk; (b) gain knowledge of facts and concepts; and (c) create digital artifacts of tree life cycles. Findings showed significant knowledge gains from pretest to posttest. We also present qualitative findings that reveal how learners engaged in noticing, describing, and applying conceptual categories to tree specimens in a complex, natural woodland setting. Implications for designing community-based, mobile learning experiences for young children outside of school are suggested.
