Addressing College Readiness at the Postsecondary Level: A Case Study of Underserved Students of Color in STEM

Sun, April 10, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section C

Abstract

College readiness is one of the most pressing issues of modern higher education. Many
students enter high education lacking the requisite skills to do college-level work. Additionally, students may be less equipped to navigate the collegiate system. Using Conley model for college readiness (2007, 2010), the purpose of this case study was to examine the strategies and practices employed in a STEM enrichment program that led to student success in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines defined as math achievement, a competitive GPA for secondary admission, and retention and graduation rates for underserved students of color at a large, public, research university. Findings revealed that nine practices and activities were instrumental in successful student outcomes.
