This experimental investigation applied a recent knowledge structure (KS) analysis model to identify the optimal way to use a first language (L1) to support reading comprehension in a second language (L2). We represented and compared low proficient Korean English language learners (n=120)’ L1 and L2 KS mental representation of reading comprehension of an L2 text elicited as mapping and/or writing. Then, all maps and writing (essays) - KS mental representation of their L2 text comprehension - were converted into a Pathfinder Network (PFNet) in order to compare each to an average expert’s referent PFNet.
