In this paper, we investigate the potential of a mode of professional development called StoryCircles for engaging pre-service teachers (PSTs) in iterative approximations of the work of teaching (Grossman et al, 2009) in settings of reduced complexity. StoryCircles are a facilitated process of collaboratively representing a lesson using a multimedia storyboarding tool. To investigate how StoryCircles may enhance collaborative lesson planning we analyzed data from a StoryCircles interaction between two PSTs, using methods from interaction analysis coupled with Systemic Functional Linguistics. Specifically, we describe how the storyboard provided PSTs with an opportunity to engage in the interactive work of teaching while receiving visual feedback used by PSTs to engage in iterative cycles of versioning responses to students’ mathematical contributions.
