The First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) Collaborative Inquiry: Learning About FNMI Education for All Students

Mon, April 11, 7:45 to 9:15am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section D

Abstract

Along with Aboriginal communities the Ministry of Education is dedicated to improving the academic achievement of Indigenous students. The Ontario First Nation, Métis and Inuit Policy Framework (2007) clarifies the roles and responsibilities of the ministry, in supporting Indigenous students. While the commitment to Indigenous education is clear many classroom teachers struggle with understanding their roles and responsibilities. In classrooms with and those without an identifiable FNMI student population it can be difficult to make time for the inclusion of Aboriginal content especially when there are so many other priorities that require teachers’ attention. In this paper we provide direction for all teachers who have questions about why, what and how to integrate Aboriginal for all students.
