Toward Democratic Discourses of Diversity: Negotiating Language Ideologies and Identities Among International Teaching Assistants

Tue, April 12, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Three, Ballroom B

Abstract

I investigate language ideologies embedded in the discourse of diversity in relation to the issues of international students’ identity negotiation. In particular, I look into what language ideologies are embedded in an American Spoken English class designed for international teaching assistants (ITAs) at a Midwestern university in the United States. Informed by Critical Discourse Studies, I critically investigate how the language ideologies are practiced in class and in everyday life and how they influence international graduate students’ identities. In doing so, I problematize oppressing discourses of diversity in pedagogical practices with respect to the relation between language ideologies and international students’ identity construction.
